This session explores the story of Hagar in Genesis. An Egyptian woman, she moves to become the slave of Sarah, the wife of Abraham and the mother of Ishmael, all before being banished with her son to the wilderness.  Distinctive portraits of her as the first woman in the Bible to receive an annunciation, to be banished, to be a divorced woman and single mother and make a future for herself link her to contemporary concerns among Jews, Christians and Muslims.
