Based on Sarah Benor’s book, Becoming Frum: How Newcomers Learn the Language and Culture of Orthodox Judaism. Ba’alei Teshuva (newly Orthodox Jews) have various strategies for adopting Orthodox culture. Some take on as much as they can as fast as they can. Others avoid certain practices or come up with hybrid self-presentations, like a black hat with trendy sunglasses, gefilte fish with Indian spices, or Yiddishisms combined with American slang.
