American Jews love to tell themselves how grim life is for Jews in Europe today. Repeatedly, I’m assailed by Americans telling me how scary it is in France, Hungary, Poland, my own back yard. They tell me too of how scared European Jews are, unlike the out and proud American Jews who never fail to fight the good fight as soon as necessary, while we cringing Europeans creep around the corridors of power asking – and rarely getting – favours.
