Although Jews played a leading role in the early punk scene, the last two decades have seen punk bands with a significant Jewish focus. Some invoke Jewish culture just for comic shtick, such as drinking Manischewitz out of a shofar, and others use punk rock as a familiar medium for expressing genuine Jewish identity and religious elements. We will trace the roots of Jews in punk and focus on punk bands whose Jewish identity is central to their music, like Yidcore, Moshiach Oi!, and The Groggers.
