Reading Between the Lines: An Exploration of Intertexuality

Understanding the meaning of a Biblical story often depends on understanding the rich and intricate web of allusions the text is making to other parts of the Bible. These references often go undetected but when recognized can add new layers of meaning to texts we thought we understood. This session will explore the ways the Bible brings texts into dialogue with each other, allowing one text to draw meaning from another to create a more complex narrative than may initially meet the eye.

Peter Stein teaches Bible and Rabbinics at the Frankel Jewish Academy of Metropolitan Detroit, helping teens discover the beauty of Jewish texts.
