One of Israel’s most controversial figures is Menachem Begin. He was head of Beitar in Europe, imprisoned by the Soviets, Britain’s “Wanted Terrorist #1” and won the Nobel Peace Prize. He adored the public and was loved in return, but spent the last decade of his life in virtually total seclusion. Yet when he died, tens of thousands of people turned out to mourn him. What did Begin represent that so captivated the Jewish world? And what ought his legacy be for people like us?
